The Makara Initiative is a spinoff of smallholder socio-hydrology research at Delft University of Technology. The agrarian crisis is an emergent phenomenon across the globe. Farmers both in developing and developed worlds are under ever growing pressure to produce more for less profit margins and under higher climate and economic uncertainty. This initiative is an organic research based response to the crisis that brings farmers closer to each other and to the markets they cater to.
Done by web-enabling a complex model, in a form that farmers can understand and use, the Makara Initiative delivers a mobile application that uniquely offers farmers risk advice they seek in monetary terms, and recommend best management practices to reduce these risks. Questions like: "What combinations of crops would give me the best profit during the upcoming season?", "How well my profit margin is doing, during the growing season?", "Which management practices should I implement to maximize my profit?" are some typical questions answered. For a farmer, Makara is a friendly farm calculator for crop inputs. It helps them maintain their own farm's calendar and gives them timely updates about best practices to improve their yield, income, and profit!
